Beauty Bug is 10!!
I can’t believe that it’s been 10 years since I made the decision to start my own business, and what an amazing journey it has been. Grab yourself a cuppa and relax while you read all about how Beauty Bug came to be….
I had always wanted to work in the Beauty industry and had particular interest in one day running my own business. After finishing a degree in Biology, I took a temping job working as an Admin Assistant for a small charity based in London. After a few weeks I was taken on full time and 11 years later was Finance & Office Manager. I gained a good background in business, marketing and finance, all fantastic skills essential to running my own business. I was very lucky to have a very supportive boss who could see my vision and encouraged me to go on as many courses as I could to help with his business but with a view to me pocketing some useful skills for my own future plans.
In 2005 baby Louis (now 13) arrived and then exactly two years later (oops!) Felix (now 11) was born and life was flipped upside down (in a good way mostly)!!! This career girl’s priorities changed…. I went back to work part time…What a shock that was after having 14 months off work. Finding a balance proved extremely difficult as my role at work had completely changed, with a new boss, a brand-new role and having to contend with the demands of a three-year-old, one year old, housework, playgroups etc. I became really unhappy and felt trapped in my new role at work.
My wonderfully supportive husband Andy, having listened to my constant moaning made the decision for me by telling me to leave work and pursue a career in beauty…this is probably the only time I have ever done what I was told!
So, I left work on 24 April 2009 and started my first beauty course on 1 May 2009. I qualified in 6 weeks in massage, facials, waxing, manicures, pedicures and tinting. I used all of my friends and family as models (including my poor Sister-in law Caitlin who allowed me to practise my first ever Brazilian wax – I think she is still traumatised!!). With my Advanced Beauty Technician’s Diploma under my belt I started Beauty Bug. On 16 June I performed my first treatment on a client! After two years of working really hard to build up a good client base, I decided to complete NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy and to set up an account with Dermalogica. Since then I completed lots of other beauty courses including threading, acrylic and gel nails and LVL Lash Lift as well as lots of advanced skincare training with Dermalogica. Being a Dermalogica Skin Expert means that I have undergone advanced training and am amongst the highest trained and recognised Dermalogica skin therapists in the World (she says taking a bow!).
I keep up to date with the latest beauty treatments and trends and go on 4 or 5 training courses every year (I do love a course). Apart from learning new skills and techniques, it’s a good way of networking with other therapists and share ideas.
Over the years I have had the opportunity to pamper hundreds of clients and some of you have been coming to me for regular pampering since the very beginning! I have a lot of regular clients and as well as the treatments, we have had some laughs and very interesting conversations! I’d like to think that I have made some lovely friends along the way and I am very grateful for your support over the last 10 years.
Some other highlights include; Becoming a Dermalogica Skin Expert, an article in the NCT Baby talk magazine, my interview with Swazi Kaur on Croydon radio and having my beauty tips in the Tesco magazine.
I have loved pampering all of my lovely clients. Thank you so much for your loyalty, friendship and all the tears and laughter (yes it gets emotional at times in that beauty room)!
Here are just a few lovely testimonials from some of you….
“Seeing Yasmin at Beauty Bug has been a firm part of my routine, for nearly ten years. Yasmin is always a great ambassador for her work, as she is not only incredibly professional but always looks stunning too.
Yasmin is incredibly skilled in all aspects of beauty and relaxation. As well as having regular beauty treatments, I have enjoyed indulgent massages, facials, manicures and pedicures. In addition to this, Yasmin has helped me to find the correct skin care products, as she is an expert in this field too.
I would always thoroughly recommend Beauty Bug. Whenever I see Yasmin, I can relax in the safe hands of a true professional and enjoy my treatment, as well as a lovely conversation.
Enjoying ten years, in such a competitive industry, is true testament to Yasmin’s hard work and incredible skill. Here’s to the next ten years!” Tamsyn Down, Beauty Bug client since 2010
